Adventure Cruises in the San Juan Islands

Imagine.  The name of your schooner is SPIKE AFRICA.  She is a fine and beautiful wooden vessel.  She may be the last wooden freighting schooner constructed that saw freight service up and down the western coast of the United States.

Mast and rigging on Spike AfricaFor centuries people have taken to the sea, to make their living, to explore new worlds, many simply for the thrill of the sail. The ships changed and evolved over millennia. By 1698 the iconic schooner rig had been developed.

Since then, the schooner proved herself worthy and became the vessel of choice for coastal trading, a tough combat competitor, and often the boat of choice for exploration.  Our schooner SPIKE AFRICA is one of the very few remaining working schooners.

Come share an adventure of your own aboard a classic windjammer and experience the fun and excitement of traditional sail for yourself.

Spike_Africa_restoration1SCHOONER SPIKE AFRICA has been completely restored over the last 7 years. Using the finest timbers and materials, talented shipwrights, headed by Alan Meyers, all with many decades of experience in the yards working on wooden ships.  This team of craftsmen devoted their winters to Spike Africa. New sails were built by Wayne Chamenti who has made sails for many tall ships over the decades.

Spike Africa now continues her working career, her heritage as a commercial, wooden schooner takes us back through centuries of travel and adventure to experience the real lure of the sea.
