Friday Harbor, Washington (September 23, 2016) – Schooners North is offering sailing cruises around the San Juan Islands this Fall season. While many would think a cloudless summer day is the ideal day to go out in the water, the autumn weather is actually better for sailing. Weather conditions are expected to remain mild, but during this time of year winds start to pick up. This is what makes Fall a great time for exhilarating sailing around the San Juans before winter finally sets in. In fact, these are the kind of conditions Schooners North’s historic wooden schooner Spike Africa was designed for.
Spike Africa was built forty years ago by Bob Sloan, a working tall ship sailor who was known throughout the Pacific for his sailing experience. The famed wooden schooner has quite a rich history to it, being used as a freighting schooner along the West Coast, Mexico and Hawaii. She also towed salvage boats, worked as a floating fuel dock, and took part in some of the most significant yacht races during the ‘70s and 80s as a support boat. Since then, she appeared in feature films and TV shows.
Now, after a full restoration and upgrades that took over 7 years to complete, Spike Africa offers sailing experiences beyond the San Juan Islands. Spike Africa has now been US Coast Guard approved to hit the high seas again and Schooners North has big plans for her.
Imagine charting Spike for a journey up into the Canadian wilds of the inland passage? Or how about a sailing adventure up to Alaska? Schooners North is standing by to help you create a most incredible adventure. Alaska sound a little too chilly? How about Hawaii? It wouldn’t be the first time she has crossed the Pacific into the tropical islands. What an incredible adventure this would be for you and your extended family.
As of now, cruise schedules are being planned throughout 2017. Spike Africa will sail from San Juan Island for private and semi-private charters, so be sure to call for details. There will also be some public sailings, simple day charters and overnight sailings. Interested parties are encouraged to call the offices of Schooners North to ask about available dates and details at (360) 378-2224.
